How I Left Engineering

... and started doing what I really loved

"Build your own dreams, or someone will hire you to build theirs." - Farrah Gray

Almost every morning when I wake up now and I have another significant money deposit in my account. Because somebody’s paid me for my teaching. Either an existing student, or a new student that just joined.

I get paid while I sleep. And it’s crazy.

I want to tell you about it.

My name is Zion, and this is my Kajabi story.

You see, in college my dream of becoming a pilot kinda fell apart. Long story. But I ended up with an engineering degree. So I got an engineering job. That was the thing to do. It was expected of my family and me. Plus I was ready to start making some money and pay back my student loans.

Now this was avionics engineering, in Phoenix. And I did it for 14 to 16 years, somewhere around there.

I really believe you can only get good at something that you’re passionate about. You’ve got to have some interest and passion in what you’re doing in order to get good at it.

I didn’t have any passion for this work.

And so it affected my self esteem. And in ways that I’m not very proud about.

I found myself always making excuses for not performing, for not rising above. I wasn’t living within my values. I kept looking for any way I could to get out of work, and to not have to get out of bed. I kept playing a victim role.

In the last couple years of my job I started taking long walks through some open, desert lots. I was in Phoenix, you know, this is Arizona.

I would sometimes take three walks a day, just to escape my cubicle.

I was dying inside.

I would sometimes cry.

I would listen to podcasts, and dream of a different life.

During this whole time as an engineer I was doing music on the side, as just a hobby. But I started getting better and better at music production.

Funny thing, I didn’t really mean to. I really just wanted to become a songwriter, but I kept getting better and better at producing my music because I didn't know anybody that could produce and I couldn't afford to hire a producer

Less than a year ago I discovered online teaching and it's changed my life. I learned how to teach what I already was doing as a hobby, and now I make a living at it.

What's really cool about this is that you don't have to be an expert in the sense that you're probably thinking

If you know more about fixing up your house, home decorating, auto mechanic work or parenting than most of your friends then you're already an expert at that field.

You don't have to be in the top 1% of that field to be an expert, you just have to know more than most people

I guarantee you probably have something in your life right now that you're good at. Maybe it’s that you're really good at preparing for the SAT. That’s a skill people would pay you for!

What's amazing is that because of reach of the internet we can find the people that will pay you for that anywhere in the world. There are now over 7 billion people in the world. That's a big collection of people to choose from and to market to.

You can do this.

You can start teaching something you know while you keep your job. And you can gradually build up student base as a side hustle until you can quit your job.

This is the first time in history we've ever had this opportunity. You can be geographically completely free. You can go to Belize if you want. You can go to South America and enjoy a margarita on the beach and still be getting paid.

This is not a get-rich-quick or pyramid scheme. This is not a multi-level marketing scheme either. It’s real, legitimate, hard work. But it's worth it because it pays you for your expertise.

I did it in less than a year and I encourage you to look into this.

You have a cash register in your pocket. Your phone and your computer at home are cash registers. I'm sure you've paid for things online through stores like Amazon or eBay. Now let other people pay you! Stop paying other people and let people pay you for something that you know something that you've worked hard on. Something that you're passionate about.

Another reason that right now this is the best time ever is that we have tools now that didn’t exist even five years ago to make it all easy. A couple years ago I used to sell other things online but it required a host domain, a website builder (Squarespace), a marketing funnel tool (click funnels), an email service (mail chimp), and several other platforms.

But then I discovered Kajabi. It's a funny name, but an amazing tool tool and website. I’ll have the link below.  Kajabi is an all-in-one platform that allows you to create and host your website, do all your marketing, your email, your blogging, keep track of all your people, do all the transactions, and more. So everything's in one place.

You do the work creating your class, your videos, you ask for help when you need it (there's this constant support system which is really really cool), and when you're ready you launch it and they’ll show you how to market.

If you have any interest in getting into this, selling something online and teaching something, like I'm doing, Kajabi is the BEST site, hands down for doing this.

Now, I don't work for kajabi but I am an affiliate, full disclosure. But I’m completely honest in saying this is the BEST online hosting service for setting up an online course, and selling information. I’ve looked into many. AND it’s a lot cheaper than using all the services I used to use.

Remember, your class could be about something very small. It doesn't have to be as big as music production, like I do. I could be as small as how you make quilts and crochet. How you stay organized. How to teach 3rd graders. How you write poetry. How to do water color paintings. Whatever!

Kajabi has a sale right now on this platform that doesn't just include all the tools you’ll need, but also includes all the training you need. Not only that, but it includes a ticket to the convention that they have coming up in Irvine California called the Impact Summit. I’ll be there!

I highly recommend looking into this, if you've ever had an interest this is the time right now.

You have a cash register in your pocket. Learn how to use it.

Stop building other people's dreams and start your own dreams.

I highly encourage you to take advantage of the sale before it ends.

Hope to see you in the Kajabi community. Hit me up if you have any questions. [email protected]
